Introducing Our New Prospect!

Brody at eight weeks old.
Eight weeks old, whelped on June 18, 2008.
By Highfly'n Royal Agate, Out of Highfly'n Royal Amber. Bred by High Fly'n Kennels. Bloodlines include Bondhu, Gladstone, Royacelle, & Bomber. Pedigree will be posted soon.

Right now, we're calling our new boy "Brody;" he's gone through a couple name changes, so hopefully this one will stick! We got him on the 9th of August, and he is now nine weeks old, weighing 14 1/2 lbs. Brody is a bold, confident, rambunctious, little, busy-body who knows two speeds: stop and go. He's got tons of prey drive that's really evident with his playing (he's always stalking and pouncing) and his keen interest in taunting the cat. Luckily for us, Sophie, aka Mama Dog, is doing a good job of showing him the ropes and keeping him entertained. Morgan is not so enthusiastic about wrestling with him, but even she gives in and plays a bit. Our old guy Jake prefers to keep his distance.... Brody is fitting right in, though! Like the other dogs, he enjoys eating garden-fresh cucumbers and cooling down in the water trough (which he can climb in all by himself already).
Brody's been a spoiled pup since he got here and spends most of his time with the family in the house. He's going to be moved to the kennels for night time as soon as the weather mellows out a bit. We've taken him on errands and to Grandma's, and he got to meet most of our family at a BBQ we just had here. This week, I'll be taking him out to some field grounds to let him explore and to a family reunion to socialize even more.... He does great traveling and meeting new people and dogs.
We're very excited about this guy. He should make an awesome, driven, hunting dog, that we can't wait to have started in the field. We're going to take him through his first season as a pup, and then we're planning on sending him to a trainer to get a good foundation under and birds over him.
Please check back for updates on his training and development!

Hunting and Training

Jake has proven himself to be an excellent bird dog. He has a lot of natural talent in the field and loves every minute of hunting. No terrain hinders Jake's hunting ability. Working at a medium range, Jake keeps contact with his handlers and is easy to direct. Jake has bird sense and knows how to keep a bird in its place with his solid points. Jake naturally quarters the field in a thorough manner, checks shrub/hedgerows, and and he retrieves to hand. He has also been taught to follow hand signals while hunting.

On top of hunting, Jake has been taught basic and more difficult commands. He also does well with agility off and on a lead, and he seems to enjoy it.

Personality

Everybody that meets Jake loves his awesome personality. At home, he is calm, affectionate, happy, laid-back, and lovable. His patience exceeds that of most dogs, and he will do anything to please people. Being easy to train and very intelligent, Jake has learned over forty commands over the past few years. Jake has no aggression towards animals or people, is not a dominating dog, and has no vices. In the field, Jake turns from a companion dog to a hunting dog and remains focused and intent on finding the birds. Jake's super temperament makes him a great dog for the family and field.

Jake's Quirks
  • Whenever Jake sits down next to someone, one or both of his paws will end up on the person’s lap or arms. It is a comforting habit for Jake to “shake.”
  • Jake keeps his lookout from the top of his doghouse. In this way, he reminds the Rocks of Snoopy.
  • One of Jake’s favorite summer pastimes is pointing at crickets and flies. He once held a bug for about ten minutes without moving.

Conformation

Jake is a very nicely put together dog, with clean lines and a well-conditioned, balanced body. He has a handsome, appealing look and very few faults. Jake has the classic, noble, English build and soft, wise eyes.

Bloodlines

Jake's bloodlines include Dashing Bondhu (Scinn Amach and Luathas), Gladstone, Tony O, Bomber, Blizzard and Wind'em (Cloncurragh, Advie, Dashing, and Machad).
