Available Puppies

Rock Llewellin Setters had Dashing Lady Sophia AI'd on March 18th and 19th, 2008. Unfortunately, ultrasounds performed on April 12th and 19th revealed that the breedings did not result in a litter. There may be a lone pup in Soph; updates will be posted on this page. If she has a pup, it is due around May 19th.

The stud chosen for this last breeding is owned by Greg and Carla Fryar of High Fly'n Kennels, in Elko, Minnesota. Here's a summary of the information we have from the Fryars: NLGDC Champion Sir Royal Flush is a handsome white and black ticked male, that weighs in around 53 pounds. Royal has a lot of drive and is an awesome wild bird hunter, with extensive experience on pheasant. He was a natural pointer and backer and is producing some very successful pups, both in hunting and NLGDC trials. "A very methodical worker when in the field, he doesn’t miss many birds and retrieves to hand." Royal also loves the water and will swim for hours. He is an affectionate cuddler and is great with kids. Royal is FDSB registered, DNA certified, OFA Hips "Good," OFA Elbows "Good," and CERF "Clear" (eyes). Royal is American bred- Royacelle, Gladstone, and Blizzard. We were looking forward to this breeding and expected very fine bird dogs from the cross. This litter's pedigree can be seen here.

Next year's breeding plans will be determined soon; it will likely be a natural breeding of Dashing Lady Sophia, as we want one last litter out of her. The sire has yet to be decided upon. If we can assist you with finding a Llewellin Setter (from us or another responsible breeder), please feel free to drop us an email.

For More Information, Please Read Below and explore the rest of the RLS website: Current Breeding Goals, Basic Purchasing Information, and Pricing Information.

Current goals for the RLS breeding program:

  • Hunting: Medium to mid-close ranged hard-hunters that will adjust distance naturally to hunting situation. Mid to high, merry tails. Stylish, proud, intense points. Good noses. Bold, confident, fast working, thorough, easy handle, and responsive. Exceptional stamina/endurance over variety of terrain. Good heat and cold tolerance. Lots of field instinct, including natural pointing, quartering, backing, and preferably natural retrieves. Will handle variety of upland birds. Primarily aiming to produce exceptional gun dogs for amateur or experienced sportsman/woman.

  • Color: All colors are acceptable; prefer dark eyes, eyelids, and noses.

  • Health: Excellent physical & mental health as far as RLS can develop. Close genetic history of at least OFA Good for hips and must be healthy dogs in every other aspect. Puppies will be vaccinated, dewormed, socialized, trained, etc. according to RLS high standards for puppy rearing for the best start possible. Genetic predisposure to deafness, cryptorchidism, umbilical hernias will be as limited as RLS can determine.

  • Size: Females maturing at 43-53 pounds. Males at about 45-60 pounds. Females about 19-25 inches at shoulder. Males at 21-26 inches.

  • Conformation: Functionally correct, nicely formed, pleasing to the eye, and overall balanced build that will be able to handle the rigors of long days in the field. Muscular, sturdy, and defined but not too course nor fine. Level/parallel planes of the head, length of muzzle about equal to length of top of head (occipital to stop), streamlined/oval skull from above, square muzzle, large nostrils, slight scissor bite or even bite, eyes well set in the head, with tight eyelids, and "bright eyed", medium set ears; tough, tight, arched feet; mid-high set straight/slightly arched tail, prefer longer tail that reaches the hock, carried above back, high on point (10-12 o'clock), merry in the field; deep, wide chest, bottum of girth reaching the elbow, with roomy cavity; flat, smooth shoulders that are near at the tips and angled appropriately; muscular, straight/parallel forelegs approximately same length as depth of ribcage, short front pastern at slight angle; muscular thighs, well bent and strong stifles and hocks, more upright rear pasterns, straight/parallel hindlegs can point out slightly at feet; proportional, muscular, strong back/topline, with slightly angled croup and strong hips; defined and minimal throatiness at the "throatlatch," coat not too fine nor extravagant but still soft with feathering on ears, neck/chest, belly, legs, and tail.

  • Temperaments: Adaptable, biddable, even, charismatic, loyal, intelligent, sweet, sociable, tough but sensitive & responsive, and quick-thinking. Gentle, confident, and bold. Active and job-orientated. "Kid tolerant." Will do good with dedicated hunting family in the house or out but also suitable to high-quality kennel conditions/atmosphere.

  • Pedigree: RLS dogs are currently lined in order of amount increasing to decreasing: Dashing Bondhu, Bomber, Gladstone and Tony-O, and Blizzard. Royacelle lines will be introduced shortly and Gladstone increased. Should RLS learn of any line/dogs that may be carrying undesired genetic traits, it will be determined whether or not avoidance will be worth the function and health of the breed.

The above goals are what RLS is striving for, as they describe the Rocks' idea of a near perfect bird dog that is the "Total Package." RLS may improve some goals with time, and sacrifice on others. It may be impossible to breed the perfect gun dog in every single aspect, but it is certainly worth the effort. Decades down the road, RLS hopes that it will have made great strides toward what it wants. If not, then that would be reason enough to keep trying.

Basic Purchasing Information:

If you are interested in purchasing a puppy from Rock Llewellin Setters, you must first complete and send a Puppy Request Form, (please note, linked Puppy Request Form does not show the current prices listed below) which RLS will use to determine their pups' future homes. If approved, RLS will put you on the Waiting List and you will be contacted in order of said list when the pups are whelped. At that time, you may make your reserving-deposit on a selected gender to be placed on the Reservation List. If you choose NOT to make the deposit, but still wish to purchase a puppy, you may choose after those who have made deposits have already done so. The order of RLS's receipt of the deposits will determine the order that pups will be chosen. Pups will be evaluated, priced, and chosen no earlier than five weeks of age. Buyer MUST be the person taking care of the dog; RLS will not sell puppies to third parties or as surprises. Should a person wish to buy a pup as a gift, RLS still requires the Puppy Request Form to be completed and the Bill of Sale to be signed by the person receiving the pup.

As a buyer, you will receive a signed copy of the Bill of Sale, Pedigree,Topper's Portrait by L. Rock. FDSB registration papers, Health Record, Nutrition Information, Spay and Neuter Information, and Recommendations. You should be familiar with and willing to comply with the conditions stated on the Bill of Sale. Puppies will be fully weaned by nine weeks and will be expected to go to their new homes around nine weeks old. Additional late-pickup charges may be applied to the purchase price, if the puppy remains at RLS after ten weeks of age to cover the cost of feeding, vet expenses, and training. LATE-PICKUP CHARGES: $15 per week until sixteen weeks of age. Older pups' rates to be determined at necessary time. Payment in full (reserving-deposit deducted) is required before Bill of Sale is signed and puppy is released from RLS's ownership.

The Rocks would prefer to meet everyone who takes home one of their pups; however, they realize that it is not always possible, due to differences in locations. If it is impossible for you to personally pick up the puppy, there is the option of shipping by air if RLS deems the distance/flight reasonable for a young pup. If you are planning to have to pup shipped to you, you'll need to contact RLS ahead of time, so that RLS can arrange it.

Pricing Information:*

There is a non-refundable reservation deposit of $150. This deposit will be deducted from the total purchase price.
Minimum Rates:

$700 for a Breeding, Hunting, and Pet Quality Female
$650 for a Breeding, Hunting, and Pet Quality Male
$600 for a Hunting and Pet Quality Female
$600 for a Hunting and Pet Quality Male

*Prices are subject to change. Prices vary due to RLS judged quality, which will be decided no earlier than six weeks of age. RLS can make no guarantee that said pups will mature into breeding quality dogs, understandably, but the BHP label at six-nine weeks old will be given to those pups that lack the immediate undesired traits as far as RLS can determine. Prices may also vary due to age and training.

RLS realizes that not all dogs should be bred. RLS expects Hunting and Pet Quality pups to be spayed and neutered, for which RLS deducts a portion of the purchase price. Please remember that pet overpopulation is tragically high. If a pup is sold as BHP quality, RLS expects that the owner uses his or her best judgement when considering breeding, in regards to the mature quality of the dog in hunting, temperament, conformation, and health; RLS would especially like such individuals to stay in contact so that help may be provided when needed.
Although RLS strives to breed healthy puppies, there are always possibilities of congenital defects. If RLS is selling a puppy that has a congenital defect and will need to be corrected, the buyer will be informed of it. If RLS has the dog in possession when it is old enough to be corrected, RLS may pay for the procedure at no further addition or deduction for the buyer; however, buyer will be paying for the late-pickup charges.
Additional late-pickup charges may be applied to the purchase price, if the puppy remains at RLS after ten weeks of age to cover the cost of feeding, vet expenses, and training. LATE-PICKUP CHARGES: $15 per week until sixteen weeks of age. Older pups' prices will be determined at necessary time according to training.

For an additional $50 dollars RLS’s vet will insert a microchip under the skin to identify the dog for life (not including the fee to register the ID number).  Though RLS recommends this procedure, it is the purchaser’s option, and RLS will only schedule it if he or she wishes.  If the purchaser would like the microchip ID, he or she must inform the breeder before the puppies are eight weeks old.
If the buyer is planning to have to pup shipped to him/her, RLS will need to be contacted ahead of time, so that it can make the plans for shipping. Some basic expenses for shipping include handling, shipping carriers, airfare, and veterinary-approved health certificates. Buyer will be responsible for shipping expenses and must pay RLS for these expenses, which must be received prior to shipping.
